Gunnery Sergeant Ronald E. Baum, a 1983 graduate who resided in Williamsburg before losing his life in Iraq, is the deceased alum to be honored this year. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March of 1986 and was first assigned as an anti-tank assaultman. During combat operations in Iraq in May, 2004, Sgt. Baum was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade impacted his vehicle while he was seeing to the welfare of the Marines under his command.

Baum’s military awards included the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Purple Heart awarded posthumously and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.


William J. Iannicelli is a member of the Class of 1942 who resides in Lancaster, PA. He was a football and a track and field standout at Altoona High where he won the state long jump championship in 1942. He went on to Franklin & Marshall College where he again earned honors as a member of the football and the track and field teams. He won the javelin throw at the Penn Relays in 1944 and in 1947 and participated in the 1948 Olympic tryouts in the javelin.

Iannicelli served as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II before returning to Franklin & Marshall where he earned a B.S. degree. He taught history and coached basketball and track at Manor High School in Millersville before beginning a 41-year career as a track and field, cross country, football and swimming coach at F&M. He is a member of the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Susquehanna Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He continues to compete as an athlete in the National Senior Games.


Dr. William F. Mackey is a 1957 graduate who resides in Alexandria, VA. He holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Pittsburgh; an M.S. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; a Ph.D. in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania; and a Juris Doctor degree from the American University, Washington College of Law.

Mackey has held senior level program management positions in major companies that combine over 35 years of international management, technical and legal experience. He has demonstrated expertise in the fields of aerospace, homeland security, information technology, telecommunications, transportation and energy.


Stephen G. Sheetz is an Altoona resident who graduated in 1965 and went on to earn a B.S. in business management from Penn State University. He also completed the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard University.

As a member of the management team of Sheetz, Inc., he helped the company successfully develop more than 300 convenience stores in six states making the corporation one of the top private companies in the United States. In 1994, the same year Steve Sheetz was chosen as a Distinguished Alumnus by Penn State, Sheetz, Inc. was named “Convenience Store Chain of the Year.”


Theodore Sky, a 1952 Altoona High School graduate living in Washington, DC. is a graduate of Dickinson College and the Harvard Law School. He has a long career in public service having served as Senior Counsel to the General Counsel of the United States Department of Education. During his lifetime of service, he wrote many of the policies and contributed his wisdom to many regulations that guide the field of education in the United States today.

Sky has published a book, To Provide for the General Welfare: A History of the Federal Spending Power, as well as numerous articles. He is a distinguished lecturer at the Columbus School of Law, part of the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.


Donald D. Whitfield II is a resident of Woodbridge, VA, who graduated in 1966. He holds a B.S. in logistics from Penn State University; an M.S. in management from Florida Tech; and an MBA in business administration from Florida Tech.

He served 30 years in the United States Army where he rose to the rank of colonel. For the past seven years, he has been employed by Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), Incorporated, a company that provides world-wide engineering services. He is currently the senior vice president and director of facilities consulting and operations and maintenance.
